Left or right is the central issue

Analysts redefining developments surrounding India's nuclear energy accord with the US are calling it the "Karat 'n' stick" policy (after Prakash Karat, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India - Marxist) as the Left and the Congress re-fortify their positions for a showdown.

As is typical in a scenario like this the fringe parties are also beginning to make a play for power. In the backdrop of spiralling costs and climbing inflation the chances of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh pushing the deal through are high.

But with elections set for next year, the Congress and the Left will have to part ways owing to ideological differences. There is one man, however, who could make a difference to the Congress - Mulayam Singh Yadav.

With his support they may not need the Left. The Left, meanwhile, are consulting their allies, chief among them the UPA. All things considered it's a classic case of Left, Right, with a place at stake in the Centre!
