Gulf News editorial: Canadians are divided as never before as the Conservative party wins most seats

After three appeals in election campaigns, Stephen Harper has finally convinced Canadians that he can be trusted with a majority for his Conservative party in the federal parliament in Ottawa.
Harper was returned to the capital with 167 seats, eight more than the 155 he needs to govern.
Twice before Canadians have given him their limited backing — enough for minority governments and as much to say: ‘There, don't get carried away with it'.
But Harper will be ruling a Canada divided as never before. It is divided not between English and French, East or West, but between right and left.
Yes, Harper has a mandate to cut taxes, ensure that the Canadian economy grows and all citizens have jobs.
What Harper needs to do is show that while carrying the mantle of leadership, he can be grateful, magnanimous, and avoid special interest groups — like Air Canada. He must listen to all.
