The International Court of Justice is far too slow in its deliberations. It is damaging its credibility by moving so slowly, especially since the gravity of the crimes that it is investigating demand that justice be administered as soon as possible.

Radovan Karadzic is accused of terrible war crimes. He has 11 charges against him, including two of genocide. He is accused of being responsible for planning the massacre of more than 7,000 Muslim men and boys in Srebrenica and of being part of the Serbian command structure that perpetrated these horrible crimes during the bitter civil wars that ripped the former Yugoslavia apart after its independence and break-up.

But these terrible events happened up to 18 years ago, in the war that lasted from 1992 to 1995. It is wrong that the ICC is only now hearing the opening statement in Karadzic's trial. It has delayed justice for far too long.
