Defuse tensions with a cool head
India and Pakistan should address their differences in a constructive way.
The level of tension between India and Pakistan could certainly not be left to circumstance, as the nature of relations between the two countries determines the level of tension in the entire region. Hence, it is crucial that differences are addressed constructively.
Since the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, both India and Pakistan have become locked in an exercise of blame and pinpointing. This is counterproductive to say the least as tensions in the past have led to bloody confrontations. Instability does not benefit any party, given also that both countries enjoy nuclear capabilities. It is therefore extremely important that both sides take on the responsibility of handling the current situation with maturity and avoid taking decisions in a hasty manner. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani stated recently that confrontation between the two sides has receded. "Normalisation takes time. All our common friends and responsible statesmen are playing their important role in defusing the situation and I'm pretty sure that will work," he said.
Such statements from senior officials are encouraging as they help in defusing tensions. But it is a fact that it requires more than words if such efforts are to succeed. Neither India nor Pakistan can afford an endless standoff.
