China can take the upper hand
Beijing can trump the protestors by holding talks with the Dalai Lama.
Far from being a symbol of global peace, the only fire the Olympic torch has started is that of controversy from vocal supporters of Tibet and those protesting against China's treatment of Tibetans. It is probably true to say, though, that as the torch wends its way around the globe the most vociferous demonstrations have already been held and that future passage will be more muted.
However, amongst the furore taking place, it was easy to overlook the little publicised comments from the Dalai Lama.
He first called for protesters to be peaceful in the demonstrations, after all anything more would be against his faith. He followed it up by saying the Olympic Games must be held in China.
If China really wants to defuse the controversy that has been created over the procession, it could seize the opportunity to usurp the protesters and have official talks with the Dalai Lama.
