As a catalytic mechanism to attain the highest of educational goals, the latest initiative by Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) deserves full marks. Its idea of encouraging fresh, outstanding Emirati graduates to serve two years teaching children in public schools in a range of subjects is a brand of pragmatic idealism that could well change the grassroots reality of public education in the emirate. This initiative targets three crucial goals: Harnessing the unique mental lustre of graduates who, having been honed by the university experience, are raring to make a difference in the world, exposing children to a fresh strain of pedagogic input with the potential to expand their faculties in a distinctly different way and, finally, forging a strong bond between graduates and the teaching profession.

The last goal is critical to boost the numbers of Emiratis in the teaching profession as the current declining figures threaten to hamper UAE’s progress towards its education milestones. And this synergy, has the potential to re-energise this bond as well as provide young graduates the privilege of participating in nation-building. All in all, Adec has created a win-win situation for everyone.
