Abu Dhabi beating the rush by planning ahead

The most telling commentary on a project inevitably factors in the forward planning associated with it. The authorities in Abu Dhabi have rightly identified the transportation sector as one that will require astute long-term planning so that development strategies are able to address future demands in this critical sector.

Abu Dhabi is planning to introduce a set of measures to ensure the city's roads are free from congestion.

Accordingly, a number of steps may be expected, including the introduction of congestion charges.

In addition, a surcharge on petrol and diesel as well as a vehicle surcharge based on emission levels would likely be considered at a policy level at some point of time.

The ultimate aim of all such measures would be to reduce the number of cars on the road.

"As congestion is increasing and Abu Dhabi roads are approaching full capacity, all options are open to create a vibrant, sustainable world-class city. To this end, no policy will be excluded," said Abdullah Rashid Khalaf Al Otaiba, chairman of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transportation.

Yet what is positive and progressive about Abu Dhabi's transportation plan is that alternatives such as metro lines, trams and ferry routes are being envisaged for commuters.

Congestion charges, is not the only answer. Alternative transportation such as more buses, trains and affordable taxis and last but not least put a cap on families who have 6-8 cars per villa. They should consider sharing vehicles.
