Bringing to attention a conviction that 'justice should not only be done, but should manifestly and undoubtedly be seen to be done', the decision by the Dubai Court of First Instance to sentence a former prison chief and 24 wardens to varying prison terms can be hailed as a landmark verdict by the guardians of honesty and integrity in this country.

The former prison chief and the 24 wardens were convicted of abusing their authority and beating inmates.

The verdict also highlights the fact that there is always room for redress, should one need to take recourse to it. This case is even more noteworthy because the ruling went in favour of prisoners who were already serving their terms.

No one is above the law has been the apt pronouncement by the judges even as they left room for possible financial compensation for those who were belittled and humiliated, both physically and emotionally. The UAE courts have definitely championed human rights.
