The proposed amendment to the judiciary law allowing the appointment of female judges and public prosecutors in UAE courts is a move in the right direction. It will ensure gender equality in the country. The move also comes at the right time since many UAE women have opted to study law and a number of them have gained distinguished experience by practising as lawyers in federal and local courts.

Now there is a training programme, set by the Ministry of Justice, to ensure the success of the female pioneers in this crucial position.

Women in the UAE have gone a long way to taking up public responsibilities. They are ministers, members of the Federal National Council and diplomats. They continue to play a significant role in national development and the new move will certainly enhance that. Finally, we hope that women who are selected judges will be chosen for their qualifications and merit, as the it is the case with their male counterparts.
