Donald Trump is being castigated in the US for suggesting that he would create a database of Muslims to track their movements. Since making the comments last Thursday, the US Republican presidential contender has come under heavy criticism for his registry proposal. It’s not the first time the real estate tycoon has shot from the lip, kicking off his campaign for the Republican nomination with a comment that labelled Mexicans as criminals and rapists. The sad thing is that he continues to enjoy strong support within elements of his party, despite the fact he has no political experience and even less common sense.
Trump is also leading the charge against Syrian refugees, saying that they should be strictly controlled and entry should be for a chosen few who won’t be considered security risks.
The next time the billionaire looks out from his penthouse office that overlooks New York Harbour, he should look to the Statue of Liberty. There, carved into its base, is a poem that contains the words: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.”
It doesn’t say anything about security risks; nor registries; nor hatred based on creed, colour or ethnicity. Quite frankly, Trump deserves every ounce of ridicule that comes his way. He isn’t fit to run a hen house, never mind the White House.
