Dubai: One person was killed and eight others were injured in traffic accidents in Dubai this week.

In the latest accident, a water tanker driver was injured after his vehicle crashed into a truck on Emirates Road in the direction of Sharjah near Dubai Sports and Cultural Club on Tuesday.

Major Abdullah Bisho, head of the Land Rescue Department at Dubai Police’s Search and Rescue Department, said they received a call about the incident at 9.30am and teams got to the scene within eight minutes.

“The tanker’s driver, who was responsible for the accident, was trapped inside his cabin and the rescuers used hydraulic cutters to extract him. He was transferred on an air ambulance to Rashid Hospital,” he said.

Teams from Dubai Police’s land rescue and difficult missions were at the scene in addition to teams from Dubai Civil Defence, Dubai Corporation For Ambulance Services, Air Wing, Dubai Municipality and patrols from Al Rashidiya police station.

Brigadier Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, Director of Dubai Traffic Police, said that on Friday, an Asian man was killed when he was run over on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road near a pedestrian bridge in the direction of Dubai.

“Despite the metal barriers placed on the road, the victim crossed from a non-designated area, and was hit by a car going faster than 120km/h. He died on the spot because of the grievous injuries he sustained,” he said.

He said Dubai Police have held awareness campaigns about the dangers of jaywalking, but people continue to do it.

A man sustained moderate injuries following a crash between a 4x4 recreational bike and a vehicle in Al Aweer area around 10pm on Saturday.

“Misuse of recreational bikes or using them without adhering to safety instructions and driving them on the road can lead to serious consequences. Most accidents involving recreational bikes are lethal, and the victims are usually between 16 and 25 years of age. It is like a mobile death machine, ” he said.

Other accidents that took place over the weekend included a bus catching fire on Al Khail Road on Thursday. No one was injured.

On Friday, a two-vehicle crash resulted in moderate to severe injuries to three persons.

“Another two vehicles crashed on Sunday resulting in moderate and severe injuries to two persons. The accident took place around 10.30pm,” Al Mazroui said.

An ambulance transported the victim to Rashid Hospital, while the maritime rescue team divers ensured there were no other victims, before recovering the vehicle from the creek.
