Ras Al Khaimah: Two Emirati brothers, aged 15 and 16, died yesterday in a crash on Al Gail Street when their vehicle collided with another car driven by a 16-year-old compatriot who suffered serious injuries.

Colonel Hassan Al Jeeda, who heads the Traffic Section at the RAK Traffic and Licensing Department said neither driver held a UAE valid driving licence.

Colonel Al Jeeda said the solo driver, who was alone in the vehicle, tried to pass a heavy vehicle on Al Gail Street, a one-way street, and was surprised by the brothers' car, very close on the opposite side of the street.

Colonel Al Jeeda said that the driver tried to avoid the brothers' car but he could not and the two vehicles collided, causing severe damage to both vehicles.

Colonel Al Jeeda said several police patrols and ambulances arrived once the accident was reported, and the medics officially pronounced the two brothers dead on the scene, while the other Emirati youth was still alive but suffered serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

No leniency

He said the two bodies were sent to the hospital morgue pending being handed over to their family for burial.

The street was shut off for traffic for a few hours until the two destroyed vehicles were shifted to the sides of the street, when the traffic flow was restored.

He added that the case was referred to the emirate's Public Prosecution for further investigations.

Colonel Al Jeeda called on drivers to show better adherence to the traffic rules and regulations especially on one-way streets, which witness heavy traffic in both directions.

He urged families and parents to prevent children without driving licences from driving to spare themselves such tragedies.

He said that parents should give no room nor show any leniency with children they know drive vehicles before obtaining driving licences, adding that a serious attitude from the families was a fundamental ingredient in rooting out the phenomenon of driving by unlicensed young people.

So far, a total of 66 people lost their lives in road accidents in Ras Al Khaimah since the beginning of the year, of whom were 29 Emiratis and 37 expatriates of various nationalities.

Crash

motorist burnt to death

Dubai A speeding motorist was burnt to death yesterday when he lost control of his vehicle and landed in a construction hole.

The man is believed to be an Arab national as the police are still working on identifying the badly burnt body, said Lieutenant Colonel Ali Ganem, Director of Bur Dubai Police Station.

The accident happened at around 10.45am when he was "dangerously overspeeding" on Al Qudra Street toward Al Ruwayah Bridge.

As the man lost control of his vehicle he hit the pavement, causing the vehicle to overturn and run along the pavement for 148 meters before landing into a five-meter deep hole in a construction site on the side of the road.

The strength of the crash caused the car to go deep into the hole before bursting into flames, said Lt Col. Ganem.
