Kelly Rowland's people said that the singer had felt exhausted when she arrived in Dubai shortly before her performance at the Gulf News Radio 1 LIVE concert at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.
So how she managed to look like a million bucks for our interview was a mystery. "Thank God for make-up!" said the R&B singer modestly.
The Radio 1 LIVE concert was Rowland's third visit to Dubai where she headlined the concert. Before flying into the city she performed in Bahrain and was jetting off to London, Germany, France and Australia afterwards.
The former Destiny's Child member recently released her latest solo album Ms Kelly, featuring hits such as Work and Like This.
"The record has had more international success than domestic and that's something I'm not mad at 'cos it's hard to get international success," Rowland told Notes.
Memories of Dubai
Rowland said her most memorable performance was in Dubai when she performed with Destiny's Child, the best-selling female group of all time. "We still talk about it to this day – the Dubai show is one that you keep in your memory bank," said Rowland.
"I would love to increase my Dubai fan base. Dubai is fly (sic)! I remember coming over here with Serena Williams, who was in a tennis tournament, and we had a ball going out and visiting the gold district late at night."
Rowland also recalled sneaking into a grand wedding when they stayed at the Burj Al Arab. "It was a local wedding with just women. We wanted to go in and dance because we love Arabic music."
Things to come
With her love of Arabic music, Rowland said she is hoping to incorporate it into her music in the future.
"The beats and melodies are hot. I can't do the kinds of things people do with their voices but I'm gonna learn. A lot of producers get their inspiration from Arabic music," she said.
Rowland said she was already working on a third album, which "feels good and nostalgic". According to her, former Destiny's Child teammates Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams are also working on new albums.
More film and television work has not been ruled out. She said: "I want to do movies but prefer TV. I would definitely go for an action role playing a fly chick in a fierce suit like in Charlie's Angels or Jessica Alba in the Fantastic Four."
Things you didn't know …
Kelly Rowland admits that she does not enjoy working out to keep in shape but makes sure she sticks to a rigorous exercise schedule.
She said: "I use the treadmill and walk at a slow pace on a high incline. I also do a lot of squats and abdominal work. It's important to keep your body fit."
The artist wants to eventually study child psychology. Cooking is a hobby the artist enjoys. "My best dish is crab tempura with a good dressing. I made that the last time I was home and my family asked me to make it again the next day," she said.
According to Rowland, her relationship with Beyonce Knowles and Michelle Williams is still as close as when they were members of Destiny's Child. "It's so funny because [when] people don't see us together they figure we don't talk," she said. "We hook up all the time and we're still very close."
We ask: Rate Kelly Rowland ...
"Eight out of 10. I think she has the voice but she does a lot of similar songs and this doesn't give me any variety as a listener." — Waad Adil, medicine, United Empire Institute of Medical Sciences (UEIMS)
"I would rate her a 7/10. I do like her music but it's not the best I've heard. It's all condensed music." — Aliah Joosub, dentistry, UEIMS
"Six out of 10. Her music is not that great and diverse. She's only famous because she was previously a part of Destiny's Child." — Michelle Frank, medicine, UEIMS
