Abu Dhabi: The first two days of school have seen no major accidents involving school students who were on their way to classes said the Abu Dhabi Police on Monday.

The new academic school year started on Sunday, and to ensure that traffic flowed smoothly Abu Dhabi Police increased their patrols at all intersections across Abu Dhabi as well as in front of schools. The stepped-up efforts come as part of a new campaign launched by Abu Dhabi Police for the new school year called ‘Together for the safety of our children’, which aims to increase road safety for students in the morning.

Brigadier Khamis Ishaque Mohammad, director of the Directorate of Traffic and Patrols at Abu Dhabi Police, said that police patrols were stepped up in the morning to ensure that heavy trucks and buses transporting workers were not on the streets from six to nine in the morning. Brig Mohammad also praised bus drivers for adhering to the road safety rules, as well as maintaining the safety of the schoolchildren while on board the bus and when disembarking. He added that bus drivers must continue to abide by the regulations that have been put in place to ensure a high level of safety as seen in the first opening days of school.

Brig Mohammad also said that awareness campaigns would take place throughout the new academic year at schools in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Education Council with the goal of educating children on the importance of road safety.
