Presidential candidates, including Hillary Clinton and John McCain, civil rights leaders and followers are expected to join the gathering.
A “recommitment march'' will be held through Memphis and wreaths will be laid at the site of King's assassination at the Lorraine Motel.
In Atlanta, the Martin Luther King Junior Historic Site is commemorating the anniversary with the opening of a special exhibit.
