An official at the police department in the city of Sherman, north of Dallas, confirmed the accident and death toll but provided no other details. Police were scheduled to have a press conference on Friday morning.
The bus carrying 55 people crashed into a ravine about 96km north of Dallas, local media, citing police who were called to the scene at about 12:45 a.m. CDT (0545 GMT) Friday. The bus fell from a bridge onto a creek embankment below, according to media reports.
Local TV footage showed the mangled wreckage of the bus. There were conflicting reports about the number of passengers who sustained injuries in the crash.
The passengers were from the Vietnamese Martyrs Church of Houston who were on their way to Carthage, Missouri, for the Marian Days festival, an annual celebration of the Virgin Mary, according to KHOU-TV of Houston.
