War on terror policy will not change

Last updated:

London: Gordon Brown has insisted that he would continue Tony Blair's policy of sending British troops abroad in the war on terror.

The Chancellor said he would use Britain's "hard power" and military strength to join forces with the US to take on the West's enemies overseas.

In a clear warning that he would not lurch to the Left at No 10, he said Britain had "no future in anti-Americanism".

"The way forward for Britain is to pursue our national interests" by being prepared "to use hard power as well as soft power, by not resiling from the need in certain circumstances to both threaten and use the military power we have, not least because we are very proud of the defence forces we have and the reputation they have around the world".
