Inquiry sought into UK failure to arrest ex-Israeli general
Retired Israeli General Doron Almog was allowed to leave Britian despite the presence of detectives possessing a warrant for his arrest.
The failure of British police to arrest an Israeli warcrimes suspect has sparked demands for an investigation.
Retired Israeli General Doron Almog was allowed to leave Britian despite the presence of detectives possessing a warrant for his arrest.
The warrant, issued by the Chief London Magistrate, stated that Almog was involved in the destruction by the Israeli army of 59 Palestinian homes in a refugee camp in Rafah in 2002.
Amnesty International and British lawyers are demanding to know why the police failed to arrest Almog and how classified information about detectives waiting to arrest him was leaked to Almog allowing him to evade arrest.
Amnesty International said that there was no valid legal reason not to arrest Almog. The clear implication is that the decision not to arrest him was politically motivated.
Lawyers who helped get the warrant issued have accused Israeli officials of interfering with British justice and have also demanded an inquiry.
