Manila: Two earthquakes hit parts of southern and central Philipines on Tuesday,  according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

A first earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter Scale struck General Santos Island, while a magniude 4 earthquake followed in Catarman, Northern Leyte.

Though they registered small-scale magnitude on the Richter Scale, Tuesday's earthquakes occured a day after five temblors occurred one at a time in five different areas in northern Luzon's Abra, Phivolcs said.

On May 9, six temblors occurred separately in Bangued Abra. There have been several tremblors in the days before that, according to Phivolcs.

The Philippines belongs to Asia Pacific Ring of Fire, where volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
