Manila: Officials say a tropical storm has blown across the central Philippines, leaving at least five people dead, including four fishermen whose motor boat was destroyed by a tornado.
The storm, packing sustained winds of 46 miles per hour, struck eastern Samar province Tuesday and moved westward toward the South China Sea.
The National Disaster Coordinating Council says nearly 3,500 people were stranded aboard more than 560 ferries and motor boats, which were ordered to stay docked for safety.
In mountainous Quezon province, about 70 miles southeast of Manila, a tornado struck a fishing boat, which took cover in a cove as the storm approached, killing four fishermen and injuring two others late Tuesday.
