Rights petition against Arroyo filed in EU court

Manila: Families of victims of "forced" disappearances and extrajudicial killings have taken their case against the Arroyo Government before a European tribunal in an effort to seek justice for their kin, a group said.
In a statement released in Manila, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (New Nationalists Alliance, or Bayan) said it has filed charges against the government of President Gloria Arroyo before the Europe-based Permanent Peoples' Tribunal.
"No longer hopeful of the Philippine government's response to human rights issues, the Bayan, together with organisations of victims and relatives of extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances filed charges yesterday before the Permanent Peoples' Tribunal," Bayan said.
The petition was filed in the wake of allegations against the government that it is responsible for a series of killings of members of militant organisations. Bayan chairperson Dr Carol Araullo said, "Amid condemnation from international groups and leaders of states, Arroyo has continued to implement a policy of annihilation."
