The Philippines will be going all out in promoting locally grown mangoes as the "sweetest and best in the world", top officials said.
Manila: The Philippines will be going all out in promoting locally grown mangoes as the "sweetest and best in the world", top officials said.
Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the Philippines will pursue bilateral and multilateral negotiations as well as aggressive marketing campaigns overseas to promote the Philippine Mangoes which is considered the "national fruit".
Yap said the Philippines exported 20,824 metric tons (MT) of fresh mangoes worth $19.539 million (Dh71.698 million) last year. Dried mango exports reached 1,028 MT valued at $7.475 million while processed mango exports totalled 11,334 MT worth $13.684 million.
He cited efforts to further expand exports to traditional markets and open new ones, including Canada and Europe.
Yap hopes to tap Filipino communities abroad to promote the fruit. He said Canada and Europe would be welcome additions to the country's list of new export markets that includes the Netherlands, South Korea, the Middle East, Hawaii and Guam.
Philippine mango exports, he said, were mostly sold in Asia, the United States and European markets with Japan and Hong Kong as the gateway to the mainland China market, absorbing nearly 90 per cent of total exports.
