Manila: Communist insurgents operating in Central Philippines had admitted to the January 27, 2013 ambush of civilians that resulted in the killing of nine people.

The Bombo Radyo station reported that New People Army insurgents under the Leonardo Panaligan Command (NPA-LPC) based in the island of Negros, had owned up to the ambush carried out on civilians.

The admission was contained in an audio recording by Chippy Regalado, spokesperson of the NPA-LPC sent to Bombo Radyo.

Regalado, according to the report, also asked apology for families of the fatalities s that included Police Officer 1 Richard Canja as well as five members of the Baranggay (Village) Patrol Action Team or BPAT, the truck driver, and another male and a woman victim, Virginia Ordoñez.

Reports said a group of 22 people, including several women and children were on their way home aboard a truck after attending a fiesta in Puso village in La Castellana town, Negros Occidental when an estimated 15 men ambushed them at around 3am.

But Regalado said they did not intend to ambush the truck. He said they only set up a checkpoint to screen those passing the area when the policemen and the BPAT members opened fire. Those injured were PO2 Jeffrey Alvarez and PO3 Constantino Villegas who sustained gun shot wounds in the leg.

Among those in the truck were five children who witnessed the incident.

Reports said that following the ambush, the attackers shouted “Long Live the NPA.”

Negros Occidental is a known hotbed of communist insurgency and La Castellana is considered by the Commission on Elections as an area of concern due to the possibility that violence can occur in the area during the polls.

Earlier, the Philippine National Police (PNP) had identified 889 election “hot spots”
