Manila: The senate on Tuesday ordered the arrest of a recently retired police general in connection with the unauthorised release of police funds.
A warrant for the arrest of Eliseo dela Paz, erstwhile director of finance of the Philippine National Police was issued by Senate President Manuel Villar Jr and ordered served by Senate Sgt-at-Arms, Jose Balajadia.
The Senate wants Dela Paz to air his side on his recent detention in Moscow by Russian authorities.
Dela Paz, along with his wife, Maria Fe, had been detained at the Moscow airport last October 11 for failing to declare to customs authorities that he was carrying 105,000 euros out of the country.
The Senate wants to find out the source of the money he was carrying with him because he did not declare the amount to Russian authorities when he entered the country last October 7 to attend the 77th Assembly of Interpol in Saint Petersburg.
Earlier, Dela Paz, had asked the Supreme Court to challenge the jurisdiction of the senate foreign relations committee on the issue.
Aside from Dela Paz, other police officials who attended the Interpol meet were retired Director Jaime Caringal, Deputy Director General Emmanuel Carta, Director Romeo Ricardo, Director Silverio Alarcio Jr, Deputy Director General Ismael Rafanan, Senior Superintendent Elmer Pelovello and Director German Doria.
Dela Paz had already retired from service in early October before the controversy over the "smuggling" of euros.
Dela Paz, along with his wife, Maria Fe, had been detained at the Moscow airport last October 11 for failing to declare to customs authorities that he was carrying 105,000 euros out of the country.
