Zardari vows to overcome 'vilification' campaign
Party members repose 'complete confidence' in leadership
Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has rebuffed a "vilification" campaign against him and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and vowed that the PPP government would overcome all challenges.
A crucial meeting of the PPP Central executive Committee at the presidency late Monday night unanimously reposed "complete confidence" in the leadership party's co-chairman and President Zardari, according to presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar.
The spokesman quoted the president as saying the PPP was a "huge political force and it was fully prepared to face all challenges confronting it politically." The committee met against a backdrop of unending media speculation that the president faces an uncertain future in view of expected reopening of revoked corruption cases against him.
Pending graft cases against many bureaucrats and politicians, including Zardari, were waived under a National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) promulgated in October 2007 by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf.
