Work begins on draft Bill to reinstate judges
A six-member committee was meeting yesterday to finalise a resolution on the reinstatement of deposed judges.
Islamabad: A six-member committee was meeting yesterday to finalise a resolution on the reinstatement of deposed judges.
Siddiqul Farooq, a spokesman for the Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), said the committee set up by the ruling coalition was headed by Law Minister Farooq H. Naek.
Information Minister Sherry Rahman, the prime minister's adviser on home affairs Rahman Malek, and Senator Raza Rabbani represent the Pakistan Peoples Party in the committee. The PML-N members in the panel are: Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, senior minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Petroleum Minister Khwaja Asif.
Naek said the committee would only discuss a resolution for restoration of the sacked judges but sources in the PPP claimed it would also deal with a proposed judicial reforms package. The committee was announced by the PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari and the PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday after two days of talks. The two leaders reaffirmed a commitment to reinstate the deposed judges in line with their accord in March but gave no date.
The PML-N wants the coalition to first reinstate the judges and move a judicial reforms package later, while some sources said the PPP is in favour of simultaneous movement on the two issues. About 60 judges, including chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, were deposed by President Pervez Musharraf in November when he imposed emergency rule.
