Karachi: At least two people were killed in firing incidents while a third person succumbed to his injuries after unknown assailants threw a grenade at a roadside tea shop on Wednesday in the volatile city.

The killing spree continued on Wednesday after seven people were gunned down on Tuesday in different parts of the city.

The killing of an activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) sparked tension at Tariq Road, the busy commercial and shopping hub. Anwar, alias Babu, was shot dead by four unknown motorbike riders.

Suspected extortionists

On Wednesday, unknown assailants attacked a roadside hotel that killed a man and injured seven others. The police said they suspected an extortionist group in the Quidabad district.

After the grenade attack, the local shopkeepers and traders gathered on the road to condemn the law and order situation and threw stones at passing vehicles. They also chanted slogans against extortionists.

The police used tear gas on the shopkeepers and dispersed them to open up the highway, which remained closed for several hours.
