Islamabad: Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has told the the apex body of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) that maintenance of law and order and scourges of terrorism and extremism were the biggest challenges his government is facing - a situation having negative impact on the economy.
Since its coming to power after the February 18 elections this year, there has been no respite for the PPP led government from unending spate of incidents of terrorism across the country and especially the capital Islamabad. The situation has resulted in ailing economy, capital flight and lack of investor confidence. Even the forex reserves have touched rock bottom.
The premier was addressing the meeting of Federal Council and Central Executive Committee of the PPP in the absence of Asif Ali Zardari, the country's president as well as co-chairman of the PPP.
Zardari, now the most powerful man in the country, took the reigns of the party's second highest office in January this year, giving the slot of chairman to his son Bilawal Zardari after the assassination of former premier and party chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
Since becoming president in September this year, he has not relinquished his party slot. There is no constitutional bar on him in wearing both caps, but usually in the past the presidents have disassociated themselves from party politics once they assume the highest constitutional office.
The late Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto -Zardari's father in law -was one such exception and continued to enjoy the party and prime minister positions.
