Islamabad: An emissary of Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has quietly visited Pakistan as part of ongoing international diplomatic efforts for a safe exit of President Pervez Musharraf, a private news channel reported on Thursday.
The envoy, Prince Muqreen, had met Musharraf as well as former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) wants the president to be put in the dock after his planned impeachment, the report by Ary One World said.
According to the report the Saudi emissary, who is chief of the Saudi intelligence, had returned to the kingdom.
On the other hand diplomatic sources said US and UK diplomats were acting behind-the-scene to arrange a deal under which Musharraf would step down to avoid impeachment, in return for assurance of secure stay and protocol as former head of state. But the PML-N leaders have reiterated the party's stand against striking a deal with Musharraf. "We are strongly opposed to giving any safe exit to Musharraf," PML-N parliamentary leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan told reporters yesterday.
The chief of former ruling PML-Q, Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, told a private channel that Musharraf would not resign and contest the charges against him when an impeachment motion is brought before the parliament.
