Islamabad: A strike was held on Saturday in Pakistan's southern Sindh province by nationalist parties protesting alleged irregularities in the house counting phase of the planned population census.

Markets remained closed in the interior of Sindh in a string of cities including Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, Jacobabad, Badin and shikarpur, reports said, and public transport was largely off the roads.

In Sindh's capital, Karachi, angry groups reportedly set three vehicles on fire in the city's Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gadap and Qasba Colony neighbourhoods. Police detained several people.

Sindhi nationalist groups are demanding that the house counting exercise be stopped and re-conducted under the supervision of the army to ensure transparency.
