Karachi: The Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) have finally reached a formula to share power in Sindh province, officials of the two parties said yesterday.

"In the first phase, the MQM will join the Sindh provincial government and in the later stage the central government," a senior MQM member told Gulf News requesting anonymity. A formal announcement in this regard is expected soon, he said.

Under the agreement, PPP, which has the majority in Sindh provincial assembly, will give 14 cabinet positions to the MQM including twelve ministers and two advisors. The sitting MQM nominated Governor Sindh Ishrat-ul Abad will also be kept in the office, sources said.

Leaders agree

PPP's CO-chairman Asif Ali Zardari and MQM's exiled leader Altaf Hussain have agreed on this formula, they said.

MQM is likely to take a couple of days to nominate its members for the Sindh cabinet slots.

Earlier this month, talks between the two sides had hit a deadlock after the government appointed a controversial officer as the chief of Sindh police. However, the stalemate ended within days as the two sides vowed to work for national reconciliation and harmony.

Analysts say that MQM's decision to work with the PPP-led government will not just bring the much needed harmony between urban and rural Sindh but also weaken the bargaining position of former premier Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League.
