Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani yesterday said the country's parliament will decide whether to reinstate the deposed Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry. He added that his government is ready accept whatever decision parliamentarians make.
In an interview with a local private news channel Geo News, the premier dispelled the notion that all major decisions were being made by President Asif Ali Zardari. "I am a powerful prime minister. All the decisions are being taken by the parliament as its members are elected by the people of Pakistan," he added.
Opposition parties, and especially the second largest party of the country, the PML-N, think of President Zardari as the main obstacle in the reinstatement of the former chief justice who along with 60 plus superior court judges were sacked by former President Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007 through a statement of emergency.
The majority of Chaudhry's colleagues have been reinstated by the PPP led government, but most of the lawyers community also demands Chaudhry's reappointment through a parliamentary resolution. The former Chief Justice is currently on a high profile visit to the US where his activities have drawn a lot of media attention back home.
