Islamabad: Pakistan has decided to raise the issue of US drone attacks at the United Nations in accordance with the recommendation of a conference of political leaders held this week, the Foreign Office spokesman said Thursday.

Necessary instructions have been given to the Pakistani missions in New York and Geneva, the spokesman, Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, told a media briefing.

Reiterating that drone attacks violate Pakistan’s territorial sovereignty and are counterproductive, he said Pakistan’s stance is supported in the international community.

In response to a question about Islamabad’s efforts to promote reconciliation process in Afghanistan, the spokesman said Pakistan has so far released 33 Afghan Taliban detainees.

It has been decided in principle to release prominent Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Baradar at an appropriate time, he added.

Pakistan believes that the Afghan reconciliation process would succeed only if all the stakeholders are able to participate in it, the spokesman said.

He said Afghan and US authorities authorities were in touch on the release of Taliban prisoners in Afghanistan.

The spokesman said Pakistan would not interfere in the internal affairs of Afghanistan and extend all support and assistance for the success of reconciliation process there.”We support a political solution that is Afghan owned and Afghan led.”
