Thiruvananthapuram The national leadership of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPM) and the Communist Party of India (CPI) are desperately trying to work out a truce in the war of words between CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and his CPI counterpart, C.K. Chandrappen, which they fear will weaken the fabric of unity of the two left-wing parties at the national level.

Sources in the CPM and the CPI confirmed that to stem further damage to their relations, the leadership of both parties told the warring leaders to stop their tirades.

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) in which the CPM and CPI are the major partners is being projected as a role model for left-wing unity and the war of words between the two leaders is feared to severely setback the communist parties' move to build up an alternative against the coalitions led by Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Agreement

Indicating that the state secretaries have already reached an agreement to cease firing at each other, CPM political bureau member Kodiyeri Balakrishnan yesterday said that CPM and CPI had been maintaining harmonious relations in the state and present bickering would be sorted through discussions.

Although Balakrishanan calls the spat as bickering, it does not sound so simple as the language used in CPM's Vijayan's statement lost the basic decency,

Reacting to the statement, Chandrappen said if things would go on like this, CPI would consider pulling out from the LDF.

The first salvo was fired by CPI's Chandrappen when he criticised the visual extravaganza of the CPM state conference which concluded the other day in the state capital. He alleged that it was done by an event management company and the party later even disclosed the name of the firm.

CPM's Vijayan described the allegation as a pot shot of a simpleton and added any one with sense would just reject the allegation with contempt.

Replying to the reaction of Chandrappen to this remark that CPM had forgotten even basic decency of language and content of a public statement, Vijayan retorted: "If anyone makes such remarks [referring the event management] it will be met with in very strong language".
