Islamabad: Hundreds of people, including religious students, yesterday held demonstrations near the Red Mosque in Islamabad, demanding reopening of the mosque that was closed after a bloody military operation in July to dislodge hardcore militants holed up inside.
The protestors staged a sit-in and later offered Friday prayers near the mosque amid strict police vigil.
The mosque was renovated after the operation that left around 100 people dead. It briefly reopened once but trouble broke out after worshippers forced away a government-nominated preacher who tried to lead Friday prayers and it was closed again.
Police have been guarding the mosque but the local administration has set no date so far for getting the regular congregation back.
