High-ranking police officer escapes bid on his life
Durrani, who was going to his office in his official vehicle, was the apparent target of the attack
Islamabad: A senior police officer in insurgency-plagued Balochistan province escaped an attack on his life with minor injuries yesterday in the provincial capital Quetta, police said.
One passerby was killed and seven people including the deputy inspector general of police, Shahid Nizam Durrani, were injured when a bomb planted on a bike was detonated by remote control.
Durrani, who was going to his office in his official vehicle, was the apparent target of the attack, police said.
The officer had been active in investigations to track down separatist elements in the province, which has been troubled by a long-running insurgency spearheaded by militants from the ethnic Baloch community.
The attack comes even as the government is formulating a package of proposals to address the political and economic grievances of people in Balochistan.
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani discussed the proposed package with the main opposition party leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad last week. He intends to present the package to parliament after completing consultations with politicians across the board, including Baloch leaders inside the country and those staying abroad.
