Karachi: Five people were hurt when grenades were hurled at them by unknown motorcycle riders near the head office of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), police official said on Saturday.
Aamir Farooq, a senior police officer, told Gulf News that the attackers threw an improvised explosive device (IED) laced with steel balls and shrapnel. He said it was not clear that who was behind the attack.
This was the second attack in past couple of days as three men, including a father and his son, were killed in a bomb explosion in Landhi, while eight others were injured.
City police chief Ghulam Shabbir Shaikh told Gulf News that the investigating was ongoing. However, he said more than three dozen suspects were rounded up in the past couple of days and that police had found vital leads.
“We cannot share more information since we want to carry investigations on those criminals who have so far evaded arrest,” Shaikh said.
He said the police’s top priority was to stop killing in Karachi so that people could live in peace.
Meanwhile, the MQM condemned the attack saying it was a ‘cowardly act’ by the those elements who want to hold the city to ransom.
Paramilitary rangers on Saturday sealed Tesar Town on the outskirts of the city and recovered heavy quantity of explosives, as well as arresting 24 suspects.
Rangers sources said the raiding party busted a bomb-making factory, where the suspects were preparing explosive devices. They said that during the raid 48 weapons, including tennis ball bombs, were recovered from the suspects.
