Islamabad: Pakistani courts have disposed of a record 330,000 cases in the month of June after implementation of a new judicial policy. Still, a whopping 1.65 million cases are pending with the country's courts, top judicial official of the country told the media.
The Supreme Court disposed of a record 2,932 cases up to June 30, while 17,380 are pending with the apex court, Supreme Court Registrar Dr Faqeer Hussain said.
Soon after the restoration of the Apex court judges, as a result of popular long march led by former prime minister and opposition leader Nawaz Sharif on March 16, the Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Chaudhry vowed to introduce judicial reforms in the country to provide speedy justice to the masses. In this connection a national judicial policy was announced in May this year to end the backlog of pending cases, and put a time bar on cases pending for years.
Giving details of the cases disposed of by other courts during the first month (June) of the new judicial policy, the Supreme Court Registar informed that the Federal Sharia Court of the country disposed of 116 cases, Lahore High Court disposed of 2,8512 cases, Sindh High Court 1,338, Peshawar High Court 2,066, and Balochistan High Court around 489.
Similarly, he informed that the lower judiciary in Punjab disposed of 241,728 cases during the month of June, lower judiciary in Sindh 20,155 cases, North West Frontier Province lower judiciary 26,957 cases and lower judiciary of Balochistan disposed of 5,820 cases.
