1,019 women perish in honour killings - official
The Pakistani Parliament has been told that during the last three years, a total of 3,236 women were killed, 1,019 in the name of honour.
Islamabad: The Pakistani Parliament has been told that during the last three years, a total of 3,236 women were killed, 1,019 in the name of honour.
A total of 10,534 cases were registered as crimes against women.
Rehman Malek, advisor to the prime minister on the interior, briefed parliamentarians about these numbers.
Malek said that a total of 3,236 women were killed during years 2005-07, 1,019 were killed under the cover of honour killing, 1,931 were forcedly raped, acid was thrown on 53 women, and 45 were burnt when their cooking stoves blew up.
He added that during this period no woman was sentenced to death.
Special laws were passed during President Musharraf's era to eradicate the menace of honour killing.
