Harare: Top Zimbabwe security officials have been in talks with South African mediators, a South African newspaper reported on Thursday.

The Star Newspaper said, Zimbabwe's security chiefs “wanted to ensure that their interests are catered for in any agreement reached" in power-sharing talks which began two weeks ago.

The involvement of the security officials, who have wide power, may be crucial in resolving Zimbawe's longstanding political crisis.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai were scheduled to meet in Harare on Thursday after signs that progress had been made in the power-sharing talks.

Both parties called for an end to political violence on Wednesday.
