WFP says high food prices biggest challenge in 45 years
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday that high food prices are creating the biggest challenge that the WFP has faced in its 45-year history.
London: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) said on Tuesday that high food prices are creating the biggest challenge that the WFP has faced in its 45-year history.
WFP Executive Director Josette Sheeran, who is meeting British government officials after addressing a UK parliamentary hearing in London, said: “This is the new face of hunger – millions of people who were not in the urgent hunger category six months ago but now are.''
Analysis being carried out by the WFP supports World Bank estimates that about 100 million people have been pushed into poverty by the high food process.
WFP expects to release figures next week estimating how many new people have hunger needs.
Sheeran added that the same kind of generosity and action received after the tsunami crisis in 2004 is required to tackle this serious issue.
