UN announces new global initiative to help cut malaria
On the first World Malaria Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced a new global initiative to provide mosquito nets and insecticide spraying for everyone at risk of malaria, which kills over one million people every year.
United Nations: On the first World Malaria Day, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced a new global initiative to provide mosquito nets and insecticide spraying for everyone at risk of malaria, which kills over one million people every year.
In a video message for an event at UN headquarters on Friday, Ban said the initiative will also provide malaria treatment and diagnosis, train community health workers to deal with malaria, and encourage research into the control, elimination and eradication of malaria.
He said the aim of his "bold but achievable vision ... is to put a stop to malaria deaths by ensuring universal coverage by the end of 2010."
"Malaria still kills more than one million people every year," the secretary-general said. "The toll it is taking is unacceptable, all the more so because malaria is preventable and treatable."
