Harare: Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been detained by police while campaigning ahead of a run-off election, his party said on Wednesday.
The Movement for Democratic Change said Tsvangirai was being held since 1000 GMT, but did not know the reason for the detention.
"We are currently held up. They are saying there's a commanding officer whom we should wait for. They are not saying why they are holding us up. It's not an arrest but illegal detention. It appears they want to disrupt our campaign program," Tsvangirai's spokesman said.
The MDC added that the ruling ZANU-PF party headed by Robert Mugabe beat and threatened Tsvangirai's supporters as well.
The spokesman said Tsvangirai has been campaigning in the area when his convoy was stopped at a roadblock.
No charges have been put to them, he said.
Tsvangirai and current President Robert Mugabe are due to face off in a run-off election on June 27.
