Athens: A passenger train carrying 500 people collided with carriages that had become detached from a cargo train in central Greece early on Monday, injuring 15 people, authorities said.
The train was traveling from the northern city of Thessaloniki to the capital, Athens, when it crashed into carriages that had become separated from a cargo train heading in the opposite direction, according to the Greek Railway Organization, or OSE.
It was unclear how the carriages became disconnected from the rest of the cargo train, which had been traveling from Athens to Thessaloniki. The collision happened about 200 kilometers north of Athens, the OSE said.
Fire officials said rescue crews spent three hours cutting the train driver out of the wreckage. The 15 injured people were transported to a hospital in the central city of Lamia, most with minor injuries, the OSE said.
