The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 5.7 on the Richter Scale, but Indonesia's meteorological department put the magnitude at 6.6
No tsunami warning has been issued, and no casualties have been reported.
The epicentre fell at 51 km northeast of Sumbawa island at a depth of 10 km, according to an official at the Indonesian agency.
The quake was followed by two aftershocks later on Thursday.
About 200 houses were damaged in a village close to the epicentre, while another 75 were damaged in the Sanggar area in Dompu regency.
