Kisumu: Police fired teargas and bullets in the air on Monday in the western town of Kisumu where protests erupted over the recent killings at Kenya's Rift Valley.
Residents said police had shot dead at least one person during the demonstrations. At least 64 people have been killed in the last four days.
Several thousand demonstrators took to the streets to complain about the deaths of members of their Luo ethnic community in clashes since Friday in the towns of Nakuru and Naivasha.
"A Molo Line bus has just been burnt and the road linking Kisumu to Kagamega is blocked, almost the whole of Kisumu is up in smoke," said Eric Odhiambo, a resident.
"People are mad at the killings of Luo in Naivasha. The police are firing teargas and shooting in the sky to try and disperse the people. But there are so many rioters, the police cannot handle them," Odhiambo added.
The Rift Valley violence has taken the death toll from unrest since Kenya's disputed December 27 election to around 800.
