Polls show Sarkozy set for victory

Paris: The last polls before the French presidential runoff, published yesterday, showed Nicolas Sarkozy holding on to the lead he has commanded for months, with between 53 and 54.5 per cent compared to 45.5 to 47 per cent for socialist Segolene Royal.
Royal warned yesterday of violence in France's troubled suburbs if her tough-talking rival wins the presidency, in a bid to save her campaign before tomorrow's runoff.
Royal also accused the Sarkozy of "mimicking" US President George W. Bush. Unlike many French leaders, Sarkozy is vocally pro-American in a country widely suspicious of the US president.
Pro-market Sarkozy and pro-state Royal offer voters starkly different solutions for France's lethargic economy, declining voice in world affairs and the tensions in neglected housing projects.
Royal has sought to portray Sarkozy as too brutal to lead France, noting particularly his harsh comments about delinquents.
