Pelosi suggests Bush should boycott Olympics
President Bush should consider boycotting the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday.
Washington: President Bush should consider boycotting the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on Monday.
In a television interview airing on Tuesday, Pelosi said: "I think boycotting the opening ceremony, which really gives respect to the Chinese government, is something that should be kept on the table."
Bush has said he will not boycott the Olympics despite the Chinese crackdown on Tibetan protesters, adding that the event is about athletes, not politics.
Pelosi, a long time critic of human rights abuse in China, added: “I think the president might want to rethink this later, depending on what other heads of state do," but said she does not think the US should completely boycott the games.
