Paris makes Dalai Lama a 'citizen of honour'
The Paris City Hall gave the honour to the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama on Monday--a move backed by City Mayor Bertrand Delanoe and his allies.
Paris: Tibet's Dalai Lama is now an honorary citizen of France.
The Paris City Hall gave the honour to the Tibetan spiritual leader on Monday—a move backed by City Mayor Bertrand Delanoe and his allies.
"The Dalai Lama is a man of dialogue and peace," Delanoe told reporters. "It is the duty of Paris, in the name of universal values, to support him."
Pro-government officials in France said the move would be seen as provocative to China, whose government has accused the Dalai Lama of trying to fuel pro-Tibet protests.
Chinese protesters have also denounced France for a pro-Tibet protest in Paris showing a Chinese athlete in a wheelchair having to shield the flame from protesters.
