Sanya: Following a tumultuous global relay, the Olympic torch has arrived back in mainland China, starting its leg in the southern province of Hainan on Sunday.
Local television showed the start of the torch run in the resort of Sanya, the first stop of what is expected to be a peaceful three-month journey to Beijing.
Crowds waving flags and cheering greeted the torch as it arrived in Sanya.
Authorities have promised that the national tour will be free from protests and violence that had marred the global run. No details on security measures have been provided.
The torch will pass through every province and region of China before arriving in Beijing ahead of the launch of the games on August 8.
